The Rev. Lawrence A. Davies, pastor of Shiloh Old Site, spoke on "two sides of Christ." There is the side that gives us joy and makes us want to praise him. But there is also the side that was willing to suffer and struggle to do God's will. Because we have tasted the joy and because we have encountered the risen Christ, we should be willing to struggle and suffer, just as Jesus did, on behalf of what is right. Jesus shows us, said Rev. Davies, that our goal is not to "have a good time" or "experience prosperity." Rather, our goal is to say, as Jesus said, "Not my will but thine be done." One of the selections from the Gospel Choir expressed a similar viewpoint with the words, "If I walk the way he wants me to walk, he will show up in me..." (An excerpt of this selection, with Mrs. Barbara Bates singing the lead, can be found near the bottom of this page.) The service also included an infant dedication. Sharron and Martin Jeffrey presented their child, Jeremiah Ezekiel ("J.E.") Jeffrey, for the Lord's blessing. "J.E." is the grandson of Lawrence and Janice Davies. For a collection of photos from the baby's dedication, click here. At the conclusion of the service, Rev. Lawrence A. Davies presented the traditional "key to the church" to the president of the Youth Council, marking the beginning of Youth Week. Ashley Johnson accepted the key on behalf of the youth. >> Scroll to the bottom of this page for a selection of audio and video excerpts from the service, including both the sermon and the music.
