I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church at Cenchreae, so that you may welcome her in the Lord as is fitting for the saints, and help her in whatever way she may require from you, for she has been a benefactor of many and of myself as well (Romans 16:1-2, New Revised Standard Version)

Shiloh Old Site's Pastoral Ministries

Deaconesses

Romans 16:1 describes a woman named Phoebe as a deacon or servant of the church at Cenchreae. The Greek text of Romans uses the same word for her as is found elsewhere in Scripture for a "deacon" or a faithful servant to God's people.

The word "deaconess" came to be used in many churches for female deacons, even though that word as such never appears in scripture. The Bible refers to both men and women as "deacons."

At Shiloh Old Site, female deacons have traditionally been called "deaconesses." They continue the biblical tradition of faithful service by:

>  Providing assistance and support to the pastor as needed

>  Preparing communion on the first Sunday of each month

>  Serving the church and its members in whatever ways are needed

>  Providing outreach to sick and shut-in individuals

>  Orienting new members

>  Providing outreach to the community

>  Preparing female candidates for baptism

Chairman: Deaconess Rosetta Noel  (540.371.1231)

Meeting Schedule: Shiloh Old Site's deaconesses normally meet at the church building at 7 p.m. on the last Monday of each month.

Senior Deaconesses: Mavis Allen, Etta Bailey, Eleanor Braxton, Marsha Brooks, Iretha Bumbrey, Ortygia Carnette, Joanne Cooper, Jean Dixon-Cox, Mary Edwards, Robbin Edwards, Gladys Ferguson, Jacquelyn Jackson, Delores Lacy, Frances Lucas, E.
