Shiloh Old Site Outreach Ministries The Norma Burruss Foreign Missions Ministry
SHILOH OLD SITE'S INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH is directed by the Norma Burruss Foreign Missions Ministry, whose members include: Lillian Richardson and Joyce Harris (co-chairs), Lillian Bullock, Mary "IB" Bridgewater, Pat Coleman, Minister Felicia Cook, Rev. Lawrence A. Davies, Johnny P. Johnson, Kate Johnson, Valerie Lewis, Juanita Pitchford, Stacie Pullam, Glenda Redding, Tiffany Redding, Billie Wyatt, and Melanie Wyatt. The ministry meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the church library. New members are always welcome. The ministry's two major efforts currently consist of providing support (1) for the very skillful and sensitive Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention, which undertakes significant ministries in many parts of the world, and (2) for independent educational and humanitarian relief efforts in under-served countries, primarily in West Africa. Shiloh Old Site's Norma Burruss Foreign Missions Ministry currently provides educational support to 30 students at the Songhai Center in Benin, a small and relatively impoverished country in West Africa. Support is also provided for a student in Ghana. Our interest in Benin began when one of our members, Pamela Bridgewater, served as U.S. ambassador to Benin. During her time there, she developed a relationship with many citizens of Benin. Another of our members, Johnny P. Johnson, was subsequently invited to spend some time in Benin, which further deepened the relationship. Ambassador Bridgewater currently serves in Ghana. Madame Honorine Amoussou, a resident of Contonou, Benin, spent four weeks in residence at Shiloh Old Site in October and November 2004. Growing up in a poor village, she developed a deep social consciousness and a concern for the youth of her country. As an adult, she has also become a highly talented and creative clothing designer and seamstress. She designed and created dozens of fashions for "An Evening of African Elegance," a fund-raising program for Benin that was held in Fredericksburg during her stay at Shiloh Old Site. (Click here for a full report, including 40 photos from the evening.) Our international missions ministry is named after the late Rev. Norma Burruss, who grew up at Shiloh Old Site and served with the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention in Liberia for a time before returning to serve as a pulpit associate at Shiloh Old Site.
