Janice P. Davies
Blessed are the gentle: they shall have the earth as their inheritance (Matthew 5:4)
In her own quiet way, Mrs. Janice P. Davies continues to play an important role in the overall ministry of Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site).
She is married to our pastor, the Rev. Lawrence A. Davies. For almost 40 years, she chaired our Home Mission Committee, where she enjoyed really making a difference in the lives of others. Although she has now retired from that position, she continues to serve the committee in an advisory role.
She remains active in the Walker Auxiliary Club, the Boyds Memorial Volunteer Chorus, the Institutional Review Board for Mary Washington Hospital, the Fredericksburg Area Sickle Cell Association, and the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation Community Fund Selection Committee.
Mrs. Davies identifies some of her most important gifts as creativity, organization, and wirting. She earned a B.A. degree at Miner Teachers College in Washington, D.C. She attended New York University and participated for two years in a Master of Education program at the University of Virginia. She taught for twelve years in the District of Columbia's public schools and later served as a homebound instructor for students in the Fredericksburg City Schools.
"I have a passion for teaching," she says. "I enjoy helping others to reach attainable goals. And I find great joy in encouraging young people to succeed."
"Although I shun publicity," she says, "I love to work behind the scenes. I enjoy sports as a spectator, as well as plays, some movies, and most musical concerts. I enjoy painting, writing, bowling, and fishing. I also enjoy gardening, walking, reading, and working the Washington Post crossword puzzle. I devote much time to my mother and love sharing with the elderly in nursing homes."
Her family includes her husband Lawrence and their two daughters and their families: Karen and Kevin Ward (and their children, Alyssa and Kevin Lawrence) and Sharron and Martin Jeffrey (and their son Ezekiel Jeremiah, who is known as "E.J.," along with Broderick, Jessica, and Cedric).
Mrs. Davies mother, Bernice Pryde, a centenarian residing at Woodmont Health Care Center, passed in 2004. Mrs. Davies has two brothers: Thomas, a retired professor who taught English as a Second Language at the Inter-American University in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and James W., a retired cryptoanalyst for the National Security Agency who is also a member of the Tuskegee Airmen.
