Shiloh Old Site's Pastoral Ministries

Pastor Lawrence A. Davies

Thy word is a lamp to my feet, a light for my path.

Psalm 119:105

LAWRENCE A. DAVIES grew up in Texas, where he began his college education. Later he came to Washington, D.C., where he earned a M.Div. degree at Howard University Divinity School, followed by an S.T.M. degree at Wesley Theological Seminary.

Rev. Lawrence Davies served as a pastor in Washington, D.C., for a few years before coming to Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site) in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 1962.

He also previously served as an associate minister at Shiloh Baptist Church of Washington, D.C., a church founded by members of our congregation fleeing slavery in 1863.

In addition to being a much-loved pastor, he has served as a compassionate and visionary community leader. He served twenty years as the elected mayor of the City of Fredericksburg, the first African American elected to that position. He has also been active in many voluntary and civic organizations and currently serves on the board of the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board.

He is married to Mrs. Janice Pryde Davies, who plays an active role in their ministry together. Rev. and Mrs. Davies were blessed with three children, Lauren, Karen, and Sharron. Lauren died as a young adult as a result of sickle cell anemia. Rev. and Mrs. Davies have three grandchildren.

Rev. Davies is known as a dynamic and insightful preacher, whose thoughtful and passionate sermons are rooted in his own personal spiritual journey and his deep and ongoing interaction with Scripture.
