The following list of names is based on our best interpretation of handwritten membership rolls from the 1854-1856 time period. All of these were either slaves or free blacks living in the Fredericksburg, Virginia, area. Keep in mind that the spelling of some names changed over time. We have reproduced the names here in the way that they were written in membership roll during the 1854-1856 time period, as best we can tell. (Some of the handwriting is very hard to read for modern eyes, as styles of cursive writing have changed.) The members listed below are organized alphabetically by last name. To jump to a particular section of the alphabet, click on one of the letters below. Otherwise, scroll down to look at all of the names.

>> If you have information on any of these individuals, or if you believe that you are related to one or more of them, we'd love to hear from you. Please contact Mark William Olson, or any other member of our archives committee or 150th anniversary committee. You can reach Mark Olson by email or by calling him at 540.371.7416. Thanks!
RELATED HISTORICAL RESOURCES >> Click here for a link to various on-line Fredericksburg research resources gathered by the Department of Historic Preservation at the University of Mary Washington. These include city directories, newspaper indexes, census records, property records, and the like. >> Click here for a link to a listing of slave owners in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania as of 1860, according to the U.S. Census of 1860. (This listing includes the gender and age of the slaves owned, but not their names. Undoubtedly some of these "unnamed" slaves were members of Shiloh.) >> Click here for a link to a listing of free inhabitants in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania as of 1860, according to the U.S. Census of 1860. (This listing includes ages, occupations, birth state, and other information. Where you look at this listing, you will see that there is a column for "Color." For most of the names, no "color" is listed, which presumably means that they were considered "white." Those who were considered "black" have the letter "b" and those that were considered "mixed" have the letter "m." A number of those listed in the 1860 U.S. Census with either a "b" or an "m" beside their name can also be found on the Shiloh membership list from 1854-1856.)
