The Lord has told you, O mortal, what is good... (Micah 6:8)
Outreach Ministries Micah Ecumenical Ministries SHILOH OLD SITE is a founding member of Micah Ecumenical Ministries, an effort by eight churches in downtown Fredericksburg to work together in the spirit of Micah, the ancient Jewish prophet who wrote, "What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8). Margaret Trower, a member of Shiloh Old Site, serves on the board of Micah. Other members of the Micah Ecumenical Program include Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, St. George's Episcopal Church, Trinity Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church of Fredericksburg, Tower of Deliverance Church, St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, and Fredericksburg Baptist Church. Together, the member churches in Micah Ecumenical Ministries are seeking to address the needs of the less fortunate, especially those without a traditional home. In early fall of 2008, Micah moved into a newly renovated 4,000-square-foot facility on Princess Anne Street in downtown Fredericksburg. The city's homeless population is able to visit for showers, breakfast, a bag lunch, mail pick-up, telephone and computer access, emergency food, and the like. Space is also available for preventative medical services such blood pressure checks, asthma screening, blood sugar checks, anxiety and depression screen, health events, doctor referral, and the like. In addition, the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board has a full-time staff member who works out of Micah's facility, focusing on providing assistance in the transitions from homelessness. Breakfast, showers, and bag lunches are available Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Appointments and other services are available as needed on weekday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A cold-weather overnight shelter is normally available November through February on nights when the temperature falls to 32 degrees or below. In addition, during those same months, Micah distributes two-room tents to those who have nowhere else to go, as well as zero-degree sleeping bags. In addition, Micah provides two apartments where homeless people who leave the hospital may stay in order to receive recovery or terminal care. This program is funded by the Mary Washington Hospital Community Service Fund and supported by a partnership with Hospice and Home Health. It aims to offer dignity to those with no home as they face death or try to recover from wounds and illnesses. It keeps them from repeat visits to the emergency room and helps them maximize free and reduced care clinics throughout the area. Meghann Cotter serves as the director of Micah Ecumenical Ministries. Volunteer assistance comes from all of the member churches. More volunteers (as well as financial support) are always needed. The offices of Micah Ecumenical Ministries are at 1013 Princess Anne Street in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The mailing address is PO Box 3277, Fredericksburg VA 22402. The office telephone is 540.479.4116. To access Micah's own web site, click here.
