Here is a brief snippet from a sermon by the Rev. Lawrence A. Davies (below right), preaching on "Joy in the Midst of Trouble." The sermon was based on 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, where Paul declares, "My strength is made perfect in weakness. Therefore will I glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me ... for when I am weak, then I am strong." In developing the text, the Rev. Davies spoke about the importance of overcoming hate with love, of overcoming evil with good, of overcoming war with peace on both a personal and systemic level--not just reflecting the "temperature" around us but actively working, with Christ's help, to change it. When we do so, he said, we find that we can have joy, even in the midst of trouble, for we are drawing from the power of One who can never be defeated.
