Psalm 145:10,8
News from Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site) The Rebuilding of Our Historic Pipe Organ THE REINSTALLATION AND reassembly of our renovated and expanded, historic 1925 Moller pipe organ was completed on Friday, October 15, 2004. The organ and its more than 500 pipes were removed from the church sanctuary during the week of November 17, 2003 (click here for photos of the disassembly). The rebuilding and enhancement of the organ, which required a full eleven months, was undertaken by the Rappahannock Pipe Organ Company of Village, Virginia. The front pipes, which stand directly above the choir area, have always decorative rather than functional. But they too have been fully restored to their original luster. In fact, the restoration of the front decorative pipes was done at the same plant in Hagerstown, Maryland where they were originally manufactured, and the gold finish that was used is an exact duplicate of the original. The intention was always to preserve and restore the organ's historic character while simultaneously adding new capabilities and sounds, making it more useful and reliable for a wide variety of music groups in the church. For a description of the organ's original and expanded characteristics, as it was posted on the Rappahannock Pipe Organ Company's own web site, click here. Musicians from all of the church's choirs were a part of the committee that reviewed and approved the plans, which were also given the congregation's full approval. In addition to a mechanical rebuilding, all of the organ's old electrical wiring and controls were replaced. That was to reduce the potential for the kind of highly destructive fire that once consumed the sanctuary of Shiloh Baptist Church of Washington (our daughter church). For a detailed description of all of the many specific steps that were included in the work, click here. For photos of the re-assembly, click here. The photos below show some of the "inside" of the restored organ.
