Sample of the old membership roll

This is a sample of the handwritten membership roll for our church in mid-1800s. This page shows individuals received into membership in November and December 1853. At that time, Shiloh was a single congregation, composed of both "white" and "coloured" members. In keeping with the patterns of the time, separate pages in the membership roll were kept for "white" and "coloured" members, as well as separate pages within each of those categories for males and females.

The sample below is for "coloured males." The first column lists the individual's name. The second column shows the month and year when a person was baptized. The third column shows the month and year when a person was received by letter (transfer from another church). The fourth column shows the month and year when a person was "restored" after having been removed from the membership for some reason. The fifth column shows the date when the person was "dismissed" from membership in order to be added to the membership of a separate congregation. The sixth column shows the date when a person was "excluded," meaning that they were put out of the church for violating church rules. And the last column shows the date the person was dropped from membership because of death.

The individuals shown below were "dismissed" on May 4, 1856, because that is the date that the separation of the church into white and black congregations was officially recognized in the church records. Since the white congregation took for itself the identity of the previously integrated church, all African American members were "dismissed" so that they could be "received" by the newly independent African American congregation.
