May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my mind be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer! Psalm 19:14
Typical Order of Service, Sunday Mornings, 11:00 a.m. OUR SUNDAY MORNING WORSHIP SERVICE under the direction of our pastor, the Rev. Lawrence A. Davies, always includes extensive congregational participation. The style is what some people might call "traditional," though even that term can be somewhat misleading. The usual pattern is shown below, though there are variations at times.
Call to worship Musical selection and opening processional by the choirs First Sunday of the month: usually our Senior Choir and Men's Chorus Second Sunday of the month: usually our Volunteers Chorus and Senior Choir Third Sunday of the month: usually our Gospel Choir and Sunbeams Fourth Sunday of the month: usually our Intermediate Choir and Volunteers Chorus Fifth Sunday of the month: usually our L.A. Davies Chorale Litany of preparation for worship Read in unison by the congregation from the inside front cover of the hymnal Gloria Patri "Glory be to the Father..." sung by the congregation Hymn of praise A joyful selection from the hymnal sung by the congregation and choirs Reading of the holy record A scriptural selection, usually chosen and read by a member of the congregation Morning prayer A prayer reflecting various concerns of the heart, usually offered by a deacon or a ministerial associate Meditative musical response to the prayer by one of the choirs Announcements Presented either by the church clerk or a member of the congregation Musical selection by one of the choirs Welcome to visitors Words of introduction and greeting usually offered by a member of the congregation Presentation of tithes and offerings The ushers pass the offering plates twice: the first offering is for the regular expenses of the church and the second offering is usually for "home missions," which assists with the loving support of members of the congregation and local community during times of special need Musical selections by one of the choirs During the time of offering, one of our choirs normally presents two musical selections Dedication of the offering A prayer, usually offered by a deacon or other member of the congregation Doxology "Praise God from whom all blessings flow..." sung by the congregation Responsive reading of Scripture A responsive selection from the back of the hymnal, chosen and led by a member of the congregation Musical selection for "moments of meditation" One of our choirs presents a musical selection to prepare our hearts for the spoken message that follows Message from the pastor A richly layered, spiritually thoughtful, biblically empowering sermon presented our pastor Hymn of invitation A musical selection by one of our choirs, during which anyone who wants to either come into a closer relationship with God or join with this church is invited to come to the front to be embraced by the pastor; those seeking membership in the church will be briefly interviewed by the deacons during the musical selection and then presented to the congregation Altar prayer A prayer for God's strength and love on behalf of specific individuals whose names have been entered on an "altar prayer register" which is available to the congregation before the start of the service on a podium in the vestibule Litany for preparation to return to service Read in unison (when time permits) from the inside back cover of the hymnal Benediction led by the pastor Three-fold amen Sung by the choirs and congregation
